Our landscaping contractor just finished landscaping our yard, and he did an excellent job. He graded the yard and added black top soil where the grass was disturbed. Around the house and around our limestone retaining walls, he placed about four feet of small limestone rock that pretty well matches our retaining walls. The decorative limestone mulch is called "cleaned chips" and is very inexpensive--about $10 per yard compared to $60 per yard or more for the colored rock people often use. Besides saving us a lot of money, we think it looks great, and we like it better than any of the more expensive options we looked at.
We saved some more money thanks to our neighbors who were kind enough to lend us a grass seed planting device. Our other neighbor used it on their lawn, and when he was finished he used the same device on ours. It's pulled behind a lawn tractor, and it has metal teeth that dig small holes in the top soil where grass seed is deposited. This saved us a lot of time and money, and we're very grateful for their help.
The only thing left to do is plant shrubs, plants, flowers, trees, etc. This is another opportunity to save money. We're going to buy all of that stuff at Wal-Mart because the selection is great, the prices are dirt cheap, and there is a one-year warranty on everything. I don't want to discount the advice available from professional nurseries, but we already know what we want to plant, and we're using a Windows software to help us design a plan.
We'll post more photos as we plant. We'll also post more photos to catch up on all the parts of the house that were finished while we were too busy to blog. In the meantime, see some more photos below that show the house thus far and the recent landscaping. (Remember, those porch columns and front door will be white eventually.)
